Pastificio Barbieri (Chiavari): from the first hazelnut husks powered oven to the first EVO from Leivi’s olive grove

“Misto Chiavari” hazelnuts and PDO Riviera Ligure EVO: Liguria launches a new alliance to attract consumers from other regions.

The idea by the historic Panificio&Pasticceria Barbieri in Chiavari: hazelnuts have always featured in the bakery’s products, now meet PDO Riviera Ligure EVO from an olive grove in Leivi. The result: the new Gold Hazelnut Cream which follows the track of the Chiavarina Cream, a long-standing blockbuster.

“Misto Chiavari hazelnuts are a treasure trove of 8 different cultivars, selected locally over the centuries, and represent an example of biodiversity – explains Piero Barbieri, owner of the Bakery with his sister Francesca -. This new spread was created? Starting from the roasting and the manual selection of hazelnuts. Then sugar, cocoa and processing with PDO Riviera Ligure EVO”.

The project is based on the promotion of hazelnuts from the Tigullio entroterra, supported by the Genoa Chamber of Commerce, with the fundamental role of the Isola di Borgonovo Cooperative, a reference point for the provision of hazelnuts.

“Requests are coming from abroad, too – continues Piero Barbieri – This focus on a product that also promotes PDO Riviera Ligure EVO consolidates our goal of catching the attention of consumers while supporting our territory”.

Cream jars side PDO Riviera Ligure EVO bottles, which feature a special label designed by the painter Luiso Sturla.

“Pasticceria Barbieri’s development model is the same we have been working on in recent years – says Carlo Siffredi, president of the PDO Riviera Ligure EVO Consortium. First the recovery of olive groves, then PDO production, followed by the matching with other Ligurian excellences, confirming the potential of regional EVO as the ideal enrichment of all foods, from starters to desserts. Providing the territory with environmental, economic and social support is exactly the objective of the PDO Riviera Ligure production chain”.
